Partnership Ads 101: The next best thing in influencer marketing

10/08/2026

Creator marketing has become a permanent line in the media plan. The IAB projected U.S. creator ad spend at $37 billion in 2025, up 26% year over year, and expects it to reach $44 billion in 2026. Nearly half of creator ad buyers now consider creators a must-buy channel.

Strong creator content can now do more than build awareness or publish organically. It can become paid media, reaching a defined audience with a clear budget and measurable results.

The creator makes the content. The brand pays to distribute it. The creator’s voice stays visible, the brand controls the media, and the relationship is disclosed.

The simple definition

A partnership ad is a paid ad built from a brand and creator relationship. On Meta, a creator can authorize a brand to run content as an ad, with the partner and advertiser accounts featured in the ad header.

On TikTok, the same principle is called a Spark Ad. A creator authorizes a post, usually through a video code or linked account, and the brand selects it in TikTok Ads Manager.

TikTok Shop Ads are the commerce-focused option, designed to move shoppers from product discovery to purchase inside TikTok Shop through formats such as Video Shopping Ads, LIVE Shopping Ads, and, in some markets, Product Shopping Ads. In short, Partnership Ads and Spark Ads extend creator content into paid reach, while TikTok Shop Ads connect that reach to a TikTok Shop purchase path.

The names differ by platform. The principle is the same: the creator makes the content, the brand receives permission to promote it, and paid media takes it beyond the audience that would have seen it organically.

Why partnership ads work

For brands, the format creates more usable creative, targeted reach, and performance visibility. Brands can compare approved content against clicks, purchases, revenue, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend. For creators, approved content can continue working as paid media, with payment based on ad spend, sales, a flat fee, or a combination.

What changes when content becomes paid media?

Organic posts rely on existing followers and platform distribution. Partnership ads can reach people beyond the creator’s current audience, based on campaign targeting and delivery settings.

The brand sets the objective, budget, audience, placement, schedule, and measurement framework. The creator’s name, account, or post remains visible, depending on the setup. The content keeps the context that made it work while gaining the systems that make media spending accountable.

Forbes reported on a study of $130 million in spend across 65,000 Meta Partnership Ads from 137 brands that found creator-led ads produced 19% more clicks, 10% higher conversions, and 5% lower costs than licensed creator content run from the brand’s account. In Meta search placements, Partnership Ads delivered 143% higher conversion rates and 63% lower cost per acquisition.

The operating model

A disciplined partnership ads program usually follows six steps:

  1. Set the brief. Define the audience, product point, guardrails, and success measures.
  2. Select the creators. Choose for fit, quality, reliability, and audience relevance. Follower count is only one signal.
  3. Make and review the content. Creators work in their own voice. The brand reviews each submission against the agreed checklist.
  4. Approve the strongest creative. Confirm permission, usage period, and platform. Only approved videos move into paid distribution.
  5. Run the campaign. Set the budget, audience, placements, and objective in the relevant ad platform.
  6. Read the results. Track media efficiency and commercial outcomes, then use the learning to shape the next brief.
